Oklahoma quarterback Jacob Switzer has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. He’s the grandson of former Sooners and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer.

Jacob Switzer started his career at Arkansas, where his grandfather played from 1956-60 and coached running backs from 1961-65, before transferring to Southeast Louisiana State. He arrived in Norman prior to the 2023 season and spent one year as a Sooner before heading back into the portal.

Oklahoma is gearing up for the third year of the Brent Venables era, and will undergo a big change in the process. The Sooners are heading to the SEC along with Texas, a move three years in the making as conference realignment got underway.

There are some mixed opinions about how OU will fare in its new conference, though. FanDuel has the Sooners’ win total set at 7.5, and On3’s Andy Staples said they’ll likely handle the transition well. That said, how they fare against Texas – which notably has Quinn Ewers back at quarterback – could be an indicator of where Oklahoma will wind up in the new-look College Football Playoff landscape.

“Oklahoma will be competitive in the SEC, we’re just not sure they’re gonna be super competitive right now, right off the bat in the SEC, but we could be wrong,” Staples said. “They beat Texas last year, if they can beat Texas this year, they can be a playoff team.”

As for that win total, On3’s Jesse Simonton addressed the thinking around Oklahoma heading into the 2024 season. He pointed to the program’s history, dating back to the days when Barry Switzer was calling the shots, to show why he’s not too worried about the Sooners’ jump to the SEC.

“There does seem to be some skepticism about Oklahoma in 2024,” Simonton said. “Look at Oklahoma’s history, they’ve basically been a recession-proof program for almost 40 years outside of a small blip there in the early 90s. They have been a consistent winner, so betting against the Sooners would probably be a bad idea.”

Oklahoma will kick off the 2024 season with an Aug. 31 matchup against Temple, but the spring game is coming up April 20 as spring workouts wrap up.
