Oklahoma linebacker Dasan McCullough plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he tells On3’s Hayes Fawcett. McCullough just wrapped up his second season with the Sooners but third overall. His career began in the Big Ten with the Indiana Hoosiers.

One year of eligibility will remain for McCullough.

McCullough was brought to Norman to play the Cheetah position. Growing into the role took some time, really hitting stride late this season. Making a switch at defensive coordinator certainly helped, with McCullough working well under Zac Alley.

“I feel like last year I was playing more DB than I was linebacker,” McCullough said ahead of the Missouri matchup. “I feel like with Coach Alley this year, he’s more so adjusted to me and what to call while I’m out there. So I feel like he has a really good understanding of who I am as a player, so it’s been good.

“I think now it’s just I like my understanding of it has changed. So I kind of like the versatility of me being able to show my zone coverage along with me blitzing and being able to show me in the box, so I feel like that gets to show my versatility.”

The success for McCullough came despite playing in just seven games. He recorded 17 tackles and three tackles for a loss. Injuries were a problem for the hybrid player earlier in the year, not making his debut until the Red River Shootout against Texas on Oct. 12.

While Oklahoma’s offense was the main storyline surrounding the season, the defense played well up to its standard. Brent Venables put together solid pieces for the unit to be one of the SEC’s best and when healthy, they delivered.

So losing McCullough to the transfer portal certainly hurts. A new program will be getting an experienced and talented player while the Sooners will have to find somebody to replace him immediately.
