Offense has been on full display in Sunday’s Super Regional contest between Oklahoma and Virginia Tech, with a combined four home runs through the first four innings. But the play of the day so far may have come on defense from Sooners outfielder Kendall Pettis.

When a ball went foul to left field in the bottom of the fourth, Pettis did everything in his power to come up with the catch. The redshirt sophomore sprinted toward the bullpen wall, which he ultimately collided with and flipped over while somehow still making the catch.

The out was the second of the inning for the Sooners, who ultimately forced the Hokies to go three up, three down. Oklahoma then went on to add two more runs in the top of the fifth to increase its lead to 7-2.

While Kendall Pettis has been holding it down on defense, it’s been Tanner Tredaway’s day on offense. The Sooners slugger is so far 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of home runs and an RBI double. He also had a home run on Saturday against the Hokies, bringing his two-day total to three so far.

Oklahoma got off to a hot start with a pair of solo shots from Tredaway and Peyton Graham in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Virginia Tech responded with a two-run homer of its own to tie the game in the bottom of the third. However, Tredaway was ready with his answer as he hit another solo shot to start the fourth as OU retook the lead. That was one of what would ultimately be five runs for the Sooners over the fourth and fifth innings.

Pettis even joined in on the action with a home run to left field in the sixth inning to increase the Oklahoma advantage to 8-2. That made him the third Sooner to go yard on the day and marked the fourth overall home run for the team. It was just the fifth home run all season for the Chicago native.

Oklahoma and Virginia Tech find themselves in a winner-take-all situation after splitting the first two games of this Super Regional Series. The winner from Sunday will advance to Omaha as one of eight teams to compete for the College World Series.
