Oklahoma‘s summer success on the recruiting trail continued Saturday night as Mustang (Okla.) four-star athlete Jacobe Johnson became the latest blue-chip prospect to commit to the Sooners. His decision elevated Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting class to No. 7 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. The Sooners’ class, which also ranks No. 2 in the Big 12, rose two spots from No. 9.

Johnson is the No. 86 overall prospect and No. 1 athlete in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 2 player in Oklahoma.

On3 rates him even higher. Per the 2023 On300, Johnson is the No. 39 overall prospect in the country.

What Johnson’s commitment means for Oklahoma’s 2023 class

Following Johnson’s commitment, the Sooners’ class includes 20 prospects. The group is made up of one five-star, 10 four stars and nine three-stars.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 185 pound recruit, is Oklahoma’s fifth top-100 recruit. The others are Denton (Tex.) Guyer five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, Kansas City (Mo.) North Kansas City four-star EDGE Adepoju Adebawore, Houston (Tex.) Langham Creek four-star wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway and Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Lee’s Summit North four-star offensive tackle Cayden Green.

The Sooners started the summer outside the top 25 of the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. However, head coach Brent Venables and his staff have put together one of the nation’s best recruiting classes over the past few months.

This month, Oklahoma has landed commitments from Johnson and Austin (Texas) Westlake four-star EDGE Colton Vasek. Both recruits are top-200 prospects.

While the Sooners are off to a strong start in August, their recruiting wins in July may be hard to beat.  Oklahoma notched pledges from Adebawore, Pettaway, Green, Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola four-star defensive lineman Derrick LeBlanc, Tampa (Fla.) Tampa Catholic four-star linebacker Lewis Carter, Spanaway (Wash.) Spanaway Lake four-star cornerback Jasiah Wagoner, Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte four-star running back Daylan Smothers, Westfield (N.J.) Hun School three-star offensive tackle Logan Howland and Perkasie (Penn.) Pennridge three-star linebacker Phil Picciotti.

The program also found success on the recruiting trail in June. They earned commitments from Crandall (Tex.) four-star linebacker Samuel Omosigho, Tallahassee (Fla.) James Rickards four-star wide receiver Keyon Brown, Denton (Tex.) Ryan four-star running back Kalib Hicks, Snoqualmie (Wash.) Mount Si three-star offensive tackle Heath Ozaeta and Fremont (Neb.) Archbishop Bergan three-star linebacker Kade McIntyre.

The Sooners may not be done landing top-100 recruits

A few more 2023 prospects may be on their way to Norman. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Oklahoma is a contender for multiple top-100 recruits.

Katy (Texas) Paetow five-star defensive lineman David Hicks, the No. 8 overall prospect and No. 1 defensive lineman in the On3 Consensus, has visited Oklahoma five times. His most recent trip to the program was on July 29.

The RPM gives the Sooners the second-best odds for his commitment (34.5%) behind Texas A&M (60.2%). Meanwhile, the RPM lists the Sooners as the favorite for Tallahassee (Fla.) John Paul II Catholic four-star safety Makari Vickers.

Vickers, the No. 86 overall prospect and No. 8 safety in the On3 Consensus, is deciding between Oklahoma, Alabama and Michigan. The RPM lists the Sooners as the commanding favorite for Vickers’ pledge at 86.6%.
