Facing a fourth-and-1 situation late in the fourth quarter, Caleb Williams put on full display why he has been rising on Heisman hotboards. The freshman Oklahoma quarterback took the ball from running back Kennedy Brooks in the middle of his run, then took it and delivered the Sooners the first down.

The play was reviewed for a possible illegal forward movement, but the play on the field stood.

The heads up play from Williams is just the latest highlight worthy play. He entered for Spencer Rattler in the Red River Rivalry, engineering the biggest comeback in the rivalry’s history and has not lost the starting quarterback job since.

He pieced together comeback on Saturday, overcoming a halftime deficit. And after the incredible fourth down play, he punched in a touchdown later on the drive to seal Oklahoma’s 35-23 win.

Caleb Williams Heisman hype picking up momentum

Prior to the start of Saturday’s game between Oklahoma and Kansas, the College GameDay crew discussed Caleb Williams’ chances at winning this year’s Heisman Trophy. The crew was split with mixed opinions on Williams as a true candidate at this point in time.

“I don’t think Williams can win the Heisman trophy,” Lee Corso said. “I’ll tell you why. He was a backup for six weeks. I don’t think it’s possible he gets more votes than Young and Corral. But listen, if he continues to play well, he will be a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate next year.”

But Kirk Herbstreit is a believer in Williams as a Heisman contender. If Williams wants that to be true, he needs to turn things around and lead Oklahoma on another comeback against Kansas.

“I would say that eight weeks in, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a year where nobody seems to want the Heisman,” Herbstreit said. “There aren’t any Heisman moments. We can bring up Matt Corral who is a very gifted quarterback or Bryce Young who is quarterbacking Alabama, we can bring all those quarterbacks up. But to me, the guy who’s giving you those Heisman moments is Caleb Williams.”
