Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
If there was any doubt in Lincoln Riley’s decision to start Caleb Williams over Spencer Rattler, the true-freshman quarterback has quickly dispelled it. After leading a furious comeback victory against the Texas Longhorns, Williams once again took care of business against the TCU Horned Frogs.
Today, Williams was honored by the Big 12 conference. The Oklahoma quarterback was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
“Williams became the first Oklahoma true freshman to start a game at quarterback since 1990 and just the fifth overall. He led the No. 4 Sooners to a 52-31 win over TCU for their nation-leading 15th straight victory,” wrote the conference in the announcement. “Williams completed 18 of 23 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns without an interception (243.4 passer rating) and ran nine times for 66 yards, including a 41-yard score. He accounted for as many touchdowns (five) as he had incompletions.
“His 295 passing yards and four passing TDs both set OU true freshman records as the Sooners finished with 525 total yards and averaged a season-high 9.1 yards per play. His 261 passing yards in the first half were the most by an OU true freshman quarterback in any half in program history.”
Caleb Williams providing a jolt to Oklahoma’s offense
After an uneven start to the season, the Sooners are hitting their stride. Despite their earlier offensive troubles, Oklahoma still found ways to win. Now with the electrifying Williams leading the charge, they’re one of the scariest teams in the entire nation.

Moreover, Williams may have a favorite target — wide receiver Jadon Haselwood. Against TCU, Haselwood caught three touchdowns from Williams in a impressive performance.
Next on the docket for the Sooners are the Kansas Jayhawks and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Luckily, it’s two more games where Williams can continue to adapt before facing off against the formidable Baylor Bears. Afterwards, the Sooners finish their season against Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
Currently, Caleb Williams and the Oklahoma Sooners are the No. 3 team in the nation. A College Football Playoff birth is in their hands.
