Dillon Gabriel is ready to let the play of Oklahoma's offense do the talking
Oklahoma saw Lincoln Riley leave the program and the perception around the offense is that it’s taken a step down. Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby and quarterback Dillon Gabriel don’t exactly agree with those though, wanting to light it up in Norman this season. The old duo from UCF are now ready to perform together once again for the Sooners.
Gabriel has not been one to discuss the success he thinks Oklahoma will have this season. Instead, he is ready to see it all unfold on the field, beginning Sept. 3 with a home matchup against UTEP. Setting the tempo for the entire game with an aggressive mindset is how Gabriel and Lebby are going to attack every week.
“I think what we’re about to do on offense is going to be really exciting,” Gabriel said. “We’re definitely going to be aggressive and that’s something we pride ourselves on too. And setting the tempo of the game. Like I said, I love letting the action do the talking just because at the end of the day, that’s why we play the game. You got to go out and prove it. I think we’ll all be able to go see it on Sept. 3.”

When Lebby was calling plays for UCF during the 2019 season, Gabriel put up eye-popping numbers for the Knights. He threw for 3,653 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions with a 59.3 completion percentage. Gabriel continued the success as well but Lebby made his way over to Lane Kiffin’s staff at Ole Miss.

Gabriel will have some key players at his disposal, even after some left in the transfer portal this offseason. Marvin Mims is viewed as one of the Big 12’s top receivers, while Oklahoma has solid running back depth as deep. The offensive line has always been a priority for the Sooners as well, setting up well for the 2022 season.
Oklahoma has been used to a prolific offense over the past few seasons. The expectations will remain the same, even if a defensive-minded coach like Brent Venables is taking over the program. Lebby and Gabriel will combine to help the Sooners keep pace with other Big 12 teams and hopefully bring another conference title back to Norman with them in December.
