Patty Gasso couldn’t be more thankful for how Oklahoma faithful has embraced the Sooners softball program over the course of the season.
Oklahoma has enjoyed immense success under Gasso’s leadership, winning won six national championships, 15 Big 12 regular season titles, and eight Big 12 Tournaments. At the moment, the vibes have never been greater around the program, and as Gasso searches for another title, she elaborated on what the support from fans has meant to her.
“I think they’re very prideful of us, and what we’ve done,” started Gasso. “We know we’re doing it for the university, and we’re doing it for our fanbase. They appreciate athleticism. They appreciate hard work. They appreciate great plays. They’re cheering when we’re doing our warmups, which I’ve never heard before. So they’re into everything. They’re paying attention to everything.
“They appreciate the short game. They appreciate the home run. They’re starting to really know the game.”
Continuing, Gasso compared the feeling around the program when she originally took over to what she’s built it into, using a poignant story regarding radio interviews to drive home her point.

“I think when they first started, they were really learning the game. Now I think they understand it. It’s hitting the radio waves. Where as I couldn’t even get asked to go on the radio, and now radio shows are dedicated to softball, which is blowing my mind,” explained Gasso. “We couldn’t even get a sniff back in the day. So just, it’s taken by storm. But I think our fans taking it by storm, and I think one of the biggest moments of this season was having 9,000 people in the Hall of Fame Stadium against Texas. That changed the whole dynamic of this sport. Saying you can get this many people. And then I made that wonderful statement about putting a softball field in the football stadium.
“… So people are paying attention. … The fact that people will fill a stadium to watch a female sporting event is a dream come true, and a really exciting time for where the future of the sport is going.”
Patty Gasso and the Oklahoma Sooners have been the class of college softball over her tenure, and she’s looking for it to remain that way moving forward. Time will tell if she can deliver another championship to the school in a couple of weeks, which would only further her resume.
