Patty Gasso on hatred of streaks: It doesn't give us anything
The Oklahoma softball team is two wins away from securing the longest winning streak in NCAA DI softball history. Sooners head coach Patty Gasso isn’t interested
Currently on a 46-game win streak, Oklahoma is heading into the super regionals with a chance to make history. However, before a reporter could even finish hinting at the situation during a press conference on Wednesday, Gasso was shaking her finger.
“I’m not somebody who even knows unless you guys are saying it. I don’t count the wins. I don’t look back in the record books,” Gasso said. “We just want to get to the World Series.”
Luckily for the Sooners, the team is both two wins away from breaking the record and their ultimate goal. While Gasso might not look at the record books, we do. History is on the Sooners’ side.
The program with the longest winning streak in NCAA DI softball history is the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona won 47 games in a row from April 5, 1996 to March 23, 1997.
For Gasso’s interest, the program also won the NCAA championship in both of these seasons; a more permanent reward in the 60-year-old head coach’s eyes.

“[Breaking the record] doesn’t give us anything,” Gasso said. “Trophies stay here forever. Titles stay here forever. Records are meant to be broken.”
Gasso knows about titles. During her 28 years as head coach at Oklahoma, Gasso has won six championships, including in 2021 and 2022. For reference, Oklahoma is one of just three programs in NCAA history to win more than two national titles.
Now, Gasso is turning her expertise on super regionals opponent No. 10 Clemson. The Tigers have won three of their last four and are looking to make some history of their own. Nonetheless, Gasso is confident in her team.
“Everything is really on point, and they’re making it look very easy, which is a sign of a lot of confidence,” Gasso said. “They look ready to play.”
