Patty Gasso recognizes how important Jordy Bahl has been to the Oklahoma Sooners’ success throughout 2023, especially during their Women’s College World Series run.

On the season, Bahl has amassed a 22-1 record, and has thrown 21 ⅔ scoreless innings during the Women’s College World Series. It’s helped Oklahoma come within one win of completing their ultimate goal, as they can see the finish line.

Following the Sooners’ 5-0 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series finale, Gasso waxed poetic of Bahl, explaining how her consistency has helped Oklahoma accomplish so much.

“She is made to be able to do that. She wants the ball like nobody’s business. Not that we don’t have faith in our others. It’s just she is like a very, very hot pitcher right now. She’s throwing the best she has all season right now. You want to take advantage of that without running her too hard where she’s going to run out of gas,” stated Gasso. “But she is just feeling it right now. Again, it’s just that first game that’s really important. Against a team like Florida State, I mean, you just got to go for it because they’re so well-coached. They run bases so well. There’s things I’m watching them, We’ve got to do more of this, we got to learn how to do this better.

“They are very, very good top to bottom in everything that they do. It was a matter of like we’ve got to get our feet on the ground. Jordy was the right matchup for this first game just to kind of allow us to get our feet on the ground.”

While Florida State’s offense may be phenomenal, Oklahoma was able to combat them with some fantastic defense throughout. That’s something Gasso made sure to touch on while speaking with the media.

Additionally, Gasso explained how Bahl’s pitching helped Oklahoma’s defense take their game to the next level, which was all-important against Florida State’s lineup.

“Well, Jordy is a big part of the defense just by the location of her pitches, keeping them off the base pass,” said the Oklahoma leader. “Like I said, I think Jayda Coleman’s play was fantastic. I saw Jayda Coleman giving applause to the left fielder on that great catch she made, because that game could likely have been over at that time.

“There’s nothing better than watching. To me, I love hitting, pitching, but I love great defense. I still think defense wins championships.”

Jordy Bahl, Patty Gasso and the Oklahoma Sooners will hope for a similar end result on Thursday as they take on Florida State in Game 2 of the WCWS at 7:30 p.m. ET airing on ESPN, where they have a chance to take home their third national title.
