The Oklahoma Sooners softball team came out firing on all cylinders in their quarterfinal matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks. Heading into the top of the fourth inning, the Sooners have a commanding 10-1 lead.

Before the start of the fourth, Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso had a quick chat with the ESPN team covering the Big 12 softball tournament. During the interview, the Sooners skipper revealed her message to the team heading into the tournament.

“You know I got a veteran team. It’s not me really telling them much,” said Gasso. “They know what they need to do; they know what they’ve been going through. We’ve been up and down throughout the season. But this is the time; this is a place where we play our best. We just want to get things back in order, and we came out exactly the way we needed to.”

The Sooner softball team has played up to the program’s traditional expectations through the first three innings and is in a position to end this match-up early through the NCAA’s run rule. If Kansas cannot pull within seven runs by the end of the top of the fifth inning, the Sooners will be awarded the mercy rule victory.

Gasso admits Oklahoma carries a revenge mindset into Big 12 Tournament

The Oklahoma softball team enters the Big 12 Tournament as one of the top teams in the country, but the Sooners haven’t been as dominant this season as some years in the past.

OU is coming off of a home series loss to Oklahoma State and is 46-6 as the postseason begins, after going 61-1 last season.

Gasso feels good about her team’s progress down the stretch. She said ahead of the Big 12 Tournament that her players are looking forward to avenging some earlier losses in the conference tourney.

“I think this team is a team that likes the opportunity to get – whoever might have beaten them, they hope to see them again to make it right or Revenge Tour, whatever you want to call it,” Gasso said.

In addition to dropping the series to the Cowgirls to close out the regular season, Oklahoma also lost two of three games against Texas this year.
