As Oklahoma settled in to its winners bracket matchup against UCLA in the Women’s College World Series, the Sooners had to make a quick defensive change. Alynah Torres lost a fly ball in the sun and had to leave the game after it hit her visor, and Patty Gasso said she doesn’t expect her to return.

The play occurred in the third inning when Jadelyn Allchin popped one up to Torres at second base. It missed her glove and hit her visor, and she immediately told Gasso she had to come out on her way to the dugout. The umpires called infield fly since there were runners on first and second bases with less than two outs, so the batter was out.

As for whether Torres could potentially re-enter, Gasso wasn’t optimistic.

“Being looked at right now” Gasso told ESPN’s Holly Rowe. “It’s tough. That was really tough. I don’t know that you’ll see her the rest of the game.”

Torres was making her 44th start for Oklahoma this year and entered the contest with a .350 batting average in her first season with the Sooners. A transfer from Arizona State, she also has 23 RBI to her name as she helped OU to Saturday’s matchup against UCLA.

Patty Gasso: Tiare Jennings ‘loves this platform’

As Oklahoma made a run to three straight WCWS titles, Tiare Jennings was at the forefront. A four-time All-Big 12 selection, she was part of all three championship teams, and she once again came up big for OU on Saturday.

Jennings snuck a solo home run over the center field fence to give Oklahoma a 1-0 lead over UCLA in the winners bracket matchup. It was her ninth career WCWS homer, and it came in her 21st game in Oklahoma City. That’s why Gasso said she had a feeling Jennings would come through.

“She loves this moment, she loves this platform,” Gasso said. “It’s where she’s her best, so I knew it was coming.”

Kelly Maxwell got the nod in the circle for the Sooners and shut down the UCLA lineup the first time through. Through four innings of work, she allowed just one hit and struck out seven Bruins as OU kept its 1-0 lead.

Gasso saw some good things from her ace in the early going, and she pointed out some specifics during her interview.

“Just command, control,” Gasso said. “Does a good job of getting up early in the count. Moving her pitches really well. Very composed. I love what she’s looking like right now.”
