Oklahoma hoops coach Porter Moser is turning back the clock on the basketball court by emphasizing the post on offense. The Sooners struggled mightily at the very start of the season but have ridden to success on the backs of their bigs as of late. Even against a lengthy and extraordinary athletic Arkansas team, pounding the rock down low worked.

Now, the Sooners still lost the game as the Hogs just overwhelmed them offensively to put up 88 points — a rare figure to reach against a team coached by Porter Moser. But, despite the atrocious defensive performance, Oklahoma did find success scoring the ball to keep up with the Hogs.

After the game, Moser pointed to the post play and the team’s efficient shooting there as a big positive on the night after posting up was a goal of theirs coming into the game.

“We were trying to post up more, but like in the first half, we had six or seven post-ups. Jalen [Hill] missed his, but Jacob [Groves] was 1-1. Sam was 2-2 and Tanner [Groves] was 3-3. We were 6-7 on post-ups. We’ve really been able to score there. It’s a strength of ours. I think I said it this morning on a radio, and they’ve been productive down there, you know.”

Moser went on to single out a couple of bench players whose praises are rarely sung but found some chemistry on a nice offensive play during the Arkansas game.

Sam [Godwin] had one little action, too. But I remember Bijan [Cortes] had a nice little play where he drove it and he threw it over the the help on the roll and Sam goes up and catches everything, he rewards the passer. It was a nice pass by Bijan and Sam finished it. So I like where they’re at. I want to continue to get that production. A lot of people aren’t posting up that much anymore and I think we gots some guys that can post up.”

You always want to learn in a win rather than a loss. Nonetheless, Moser is happy to have found a consistent source of efficient scoring on the offensive end going forward. Still going to be an uphill climb for this group once Big 12 play gets kicking.
