Porter Moser shares hilarious memory of Frank Broyles
In another universe Porter Moser was an Arkansas basketball coach. Moser, now in his fourth year as the coach at Oklahoma, interviewed for the open Razorbacks job following the 2001-02 season, his second at nearby Arkansas-Little Rock.
During his podium interview at SEC Basketball Media Days, Moser recalled his conversation with then-athletic director Frank Broyles about the job. Broyles is a legend in Razorback athletics as he was the football coach from 1958-76 before enjoying a 33-year stint at the AD.
“Super smart,” he said. “Bigger than life personality. Picked me up himself from the airport. Worst driver I ever drove with. Really smart guy. Loved talking sports with him. Really great conversations. All of it was positives and then driving from the airport to the thing, I felt like I needed two seat belts.”
Moser ultimately did not get the job as he return to UALR for the next season. After that year, he left to take over at Illinois State before later landing at Loyola Chicago, where he was prior to taking the Oklahoma job.
Broyles would go on to retire following the 2007 season and passed away 10 years later at age 92. He leaves behind a legacy that includes coaching famous names such as Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson.

As for Moser, things worked out well enough for him as he famously took Loyola Chicago to the Final Four in 2018. He has compiled a 54-45 record across his first three seasons with the Sooners but has yet to make an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Now with OU getting ready to enter the SEC, Moser will face Arkansas for the fourth straight season when the teams meet on Jan. 25 in Fayetteville. The coach so far has a 1-2 in those games but will look to even things up.
Oklahoma enters this year picked to finish 15th out of 16 teams in the SEC, but will hope to outperform that mark. The Sooners are coming off of a 20-win season and have a mix of returning talent like Sam Godwin and Jalon Moore as well as incoming players such as freshman Jeremiah Fears.
We’ll see how it all plays out as OU is set to open the 2024-25 season on Nov. 4 against Lindenwood.
