With the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team currently sitting one game below .500, it would be easy for the team to lose faith in themselves. But one person who will never lose faith in the squad is head coach Porter Moser. In his program, Moser not only wants his players to know his level of confidence in them but wants them to hear his belief in them every day.

“I want them to look at me every day saying, ‘ Man, coach believes we can win every game we walk into.’ Because I do; I really do,” said Moser. “Every bone in my body I prepare like it. My staff prepares like it. We came in, (and) we met yesterday, and when I walked in that locker room, everything was — what do we need to do better from the Kansas game, what could be done better? And this is what we gotta do to beat Kansas State.”

After dropping the No. 1 team in the nation, Alabama, in the Big 12–SEC showdown, Oklahoma has been in a tailspin losing their last four games. And with all four losses coming by way of double digits margins, Moser’s belief in Sooners basketball could come off as disingenuous. This is why he and his staff work tirelessly to show their players they are 100 percent committed to them.

“It’s not fake; it’s authentic. I really go into every single game, and I believe that with this group. They walk in, and they know that my preparation, my staff’s preparation, (and) every belief is 100 percent that we can win. That’s what they got to see out of me every day. And we got to help them be more consistent. We’ve gotta put them in better position to be more consistent and that starts with me. We’ll continue to try and push that wall down.”

Oklahoma has a chance to get back to .500 on Tuesday when they host the Kansas State Wildcats. The Sooners’ showdown with the Wildcats will be their third straight game against a top-15-ranked opponent.

Still, regardless of K-State’s ranking, Oklahoma must approach this game with the utmost confidence that they will come out victorious. And if they need somewhere to pull that confidence from, the players won’t have to look much further than their head coach. After leading the Sooners to an upset victory over Alabama, he knows what his team is capable of doing and believes they can win every time they take the floor.
