Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was on the receiving end of a scary hit against TCU when sliding to the ground. He was not able to return to the game and entered concussion protocol. Now, Gabriel’s status ahead of Saturday’s Red River Showdown vs. Texas is in question.
Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby would not provide an update on Gabriel, leaving it for head coach Brent Venables on Tuesday. However, some information did come out via a video from outside of practice. Gabriel was seen without pads, only wearing a blue practice jersey.

If Gabriel was not practicing on Monday, he will have four more days to get ready for the Texas matchup. While the quarterback is not the only injury the Sooners are dealing with, he might be the most important if he cannot play in Dallas.

Brent Venables comments on hit after Dillon Gabriel injury
After suffering a blowout loss to TCU, Venables did not have an immediate update on Gabriel. Venables did say the quarterback was in concussion protocol and all of his “concern” is about Gabriels’ health and safety.

“We don’t have an update,” Venables told reporters. “He’s under concussion protocol and I don’t think a whole lot about the hit. It’s football. If you don’t like it, it’s part of the game. My concern is with Dillon and his health and his safety.”
If Oklahoma does not trot No. 8 onto the field at the Cotton Bowl, Davis Beville will be the presumed starter. He entered the game against TCU but was not able to create any offensive magic. Beville will also have a full week of practice to prepare for Red River.
