Oklahoma forward Sam Godwin has been questionable to play in the Sooners’ season opener on Monday due to a concussion. On Friday, Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser provided an update on Godwin’s condition.

“Sam has had a couple good days in a row, as the concussion protocol goes,” Moser said. “If all goes well, he should be back Sunday and available Monday.”

Oklahoma would be happy to have him back. Godwin started in all 31 of his appearances last season, averaging 6.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 59.5% from the field.

Godwin played his best game of the season in Oklahoma’s narrow 87-85 loss to the Houston Cougars, who were the No. 1 team in the country at the time. In the loss, Godwin tallied a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds, connecting on all six of his attempts from the floor.

Along with Jalon Moore, Sam Godwin is a team leader for the Sooners. In October, Moser discussed how much he values the two veteran standouts.

“Retention is so big, not just in basketball but in a lot of the sports in college,” Moser said. “That’s been a challenge in the NIL and transfer portal era. Having Jalon Moore and Sam Godwin come back, unanimously people on the team, those were two of the toughest guys. The loyalty, the vision that they have. They attacked the summer and getting better.

“It helped because what retention does for you – when new guys enter the program – especially when you have more than two. My ideal, my vision for where Oklahoma basketball is going to get is it will eight or nine coming back. Those eight or nine are telling the new guys this is how we do things, how hard we go, this is our standard. Jalon and Sam have been doing that.”

On Monday, Oklahoma will look to its leaders as it squares off against Lindenwood in its season opener at 9 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPN+.
