Seth Littrell shares how he has grown as a coach at Oklahoma
Jeff Lebby left quite the hole that Oklahoma needed to fill on their staff over this past month. It took two people for the Sooners to do so, including one Seth Littrell, after his first year back in Norman as an offensive analyst.
Littrell spoke about these past few months with Oklahoma during a press conference before the Alamo Bowl, a game in which the Sooners lost 38-24 to Arizona in San Antonio. It has, in his eyes, been an opportunity that has helped him become a better coach and person across the board.
“Well, I just think I’ve been with a great staff. Coach Venables and this group, understanding the culture, all the hard work they’ve put in here,” said Littrell. “Just being able to sit back and really observe for this past year has been really refreshing. It has helped me grow, not only as a coach but as a person.”
“I feel like getting a really good sense of what we did offensively here, the way we played. I thought Coach Lebby did a phenomenal job, along with a ton of great coaches in that room,” Littrell said. “Just being around them every day? You’re going to learn and you’re going to grow. It has been a blessing for me just to have that opportunity this year.”
Littrell finished a seven-year run at North Texas a year ago after the Mean Green moved on from him. They did so after he went 44-44 over his time as head coach, including 21-27 over the last four years.
Before that, he had made stops as offensive coordinator at, ironically enough, Arizona as well as at Indiana and North Carolina before landing in Denton.
With him out of a job, Littrell could have taken some span of time off. Instead, Venables came calling and, with how things has turned out, he has now become the offensive coordinator alongside Joe Jon Finley.

It has been a whirlwind over the month of December with his responsibilities changing in such a way. However, he says the fellow staff members and players have made it easier for that transition to get underway.
“I’ll tell you it has been very fast over the past few weeks,” said Littrell. “Having gone from not knowing exactly what I was doing after the season to going out on the road recruiting, to the transfer portal? To the bowl practices, the bowl prep? Trying to get on the same page with all the coaches during this time has been very challenging.”
“We’ve got a very hard working crew,” Littrell continued. “The great thing about our situation we have? We have great players, very experienced players that know how to go out and make plays. So, as of right now, it’s just keeping it the way we’ve been doing things.”
With their season now over, Littrell can now truly dive into what Oklahoma’s offense will look like under him. That will progress over the next few months as he takes full ownership of the unit heading into next season.
“Terminology is not changing, the offense that we’re running will stay consistent to what we’ve done throughout the year. Then we can look up after the season and figure out what we need to do moving forward as adjustments and kind of evolving how we grow.”
