Joe Castiglione confirms Skip Johnson plans to return to Oklahoma, sign extension through 2029
Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castiglione has made it official. Skip Johnson is staying in Norman and signing a new contract.
Castiglione released a statement announcing Johnson’s return to Oklahoma amid Texas A&M’s pursuit to replace Jim Schlossnagle. He also confirmed the Sooners plan to offer an extension through the 2029 season, cementing Johnson’s long-term future as OU makes the move to the SEC next week.

Oklahoma made the announcement via social media. It comes after On3 and Sooner Scoop’s Eddie Radosevich updated where things stand on The Crimson Corner board Saturday morning.
“Yesterday I met with Coach Skip Johnson for his annual performance review and planning for the upcoming year,” Castiglione said. “We reflected on our baseball team’s tremendously successful 2024 season that resulted in our program’s first Big 12 regular season championship and us hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2010. The job Coach Johnson and his staff have done is simply remarkable.
“I’m excited to announce that, pending Board of Regents approval, we are extending our relationship and investment in Coach Johnson and our baseball program by agreeing to a new contract that will run through the 2029 season. He is deserving of that, and we look forward to more big things certainly on the horizon under Skip’s leadership.”

Johnson has a 229-153 overall record during his seven seasons at Oklahoma, including an 85-65 mark in Big 12 play. He’s the latest candidate at Texas A&M to stay with their current program, along with Virginia’s Brian O’Connor. The Daily Progress’ Greg Madia reported his plans to remain at UVA Friday morning.
Throughout Saturday, Johnson and Castiglione hinted at the news about his future as head baseball coach. Now, it’s official. He is remaining at Oklahoma, and Texas A&M’s search is continuing.
Johnson was one of a handful of names to interview for the Texas A&M opening after Jim Schlossnagle left for Texas. Wake Forest head coach Tom Walter and Aggies assistant Michael Earley – who’s preparing to join Schlossnagle with the Longhorns – also interviewed for the position this week, Rogers previously reported.
Indications are Texas A&M could move quickly with the search to replace Schlossnagle, who took the Aggies to the College World Series final before his departure earlier this week. D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers said the Aggies are “zeroing in on three guys” for the job as the search takes another turn.
