Report: Skip Johnson to sign new contract with Oklahoma, was 'in the mix' for Texas A&M job

As Texas A&M works through its coaching search, Skip Johnson is likely moving off the board. He’s expected to sign a new contract with Oklahoma, D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reported.

Johnson was “most definitely in the mix” to replace Jim Schlossnagle at College Station, but is now likely staying in Norman, according to Rogers. He added Texas A&M is now “zeroing in on three guys” for the job.

Johnson was one of a handful of names to interview for the Texas A&M opening after Schlossnagle left for Texas. On3 and Sooner Scoop’s Eddie Radosevich provided an update on the Aggies’ interest and where things stand on the next steps for Johnson at Oklahoma on The Crimson Corner board Saturday morning, as well.

Wake Forest head coach Tom Walter and Aggies assistant Michael Earley – who’s preparing to join Schlossnagle with the Longhorns – also interviewed for the position this week, Rogers previously reported. Indications are Texas A&M could move quickly with the search to replace Schlossnagle, who took the Aggies to the College World Series final before his departure earlier this week.

Skip Johnson has a 229-153 overall record during his seven seasons at Oklahoma, including an 85-65 mark in Big 12 play. He’s the latest candidate at Texas A&M to stay put, along with Virginia’s Brian O’Connor. The Daily Progress’ Greg Madia reported his plans to remain at UVA Friday morning.

As for who else could be on Texas A&M’s radar, Rogers told TexAgs the Aggies could go big game hunting as Trev Alberts goes through the process to replace Schlossnagle. That could include calling the coach who just beat the Aggies in the CWS final, although it doesn’t sound like he’ll leave Tennessee.

“He’s not leaving, but you’ve got to call Tony Vitello, he’s got Aggies in his family,” Rogers said. “You’ve got to at least call and be like, ‘Hey, any interest?’ From there, the other people I would at least take a gander at would be Kevin O’Sullivan. He’s made it abundantly clear that Florida needs some help on NIL fronts. Like, he made it very clear. He’s a guy that if he went to A&M, he would have a lot of NIL money from what I’m hearing — a lot of money.

“So I think there are coaches out there at an elite level that I think would have a pretty decent shot with.”
