Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions wide receiver Javonnie Gibson has committed to transfer to the Oklahoma Sooners, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Javonnie Gibson played his high school football at Opelousas in Louisiana. There, he was an unranked recruit in the Class of 2022. Upon entering the Transfer Portal this offseason, he became a highly sought-after wide receiver moving up to the FBS level.

2024 was a massive season for Javonnie Gibson. He finished the year with 70 catches for 1,215 yards. That’s an average of 17.4 yards per reception. He also had nine touchdown catches on the season.

Transferring as a redshirt sophomore, Javonnie Gibson has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off a frustrating first season in the SEC. Amid a season where Oklahoma went just 6-6 and 2-6 in SEC play, head coach Brent Venables made the decision to change offensive coordinators. He also made the decision to change quarterbacks multiple times during the season.

As a team, Oklahoma was just 122nd in the country in passing offense, averaging 167.6 yards per game through the air in the regular season. That was last in the SEC. It also contributed to Oklahoma being just 94th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 24.3 points per game.

Now, with the Transfer Portal in full swing, it looks as though Brent Venables is looking to improve his roster going into the offseason and have better results moving forward.

To this point, Oklahoma has the 68th-ranked transfer class of the 2025 cycle. That includes seeing 24 players exit the program with two players committed to join the Sooners. Javonnie Gibson is one of those two players and the other is a punter, Jacob Ulrich, who is coming over from Kennesaw State. Of course, there is still time and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Oklahoma add more transfers.
