Brent Venables names best traits Marvin Mims brings to Oklahoma
Through two games for Oklahoma, Marvin Mims is the Sooners’ leading receiver and it’s not really close. He has 244 yards and two touchdowns on 10 receptions, while Theo Wease is the next closest with 74 yards. Early on, Mims has been the man for both offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby and quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Head coach Brent Venables recently discussed Mims but not what he brings to the football field. He talked about how good of a person the wide receiver is, saying he’s one of the best leaders inside the program. Even though Mims is more reserved than others, Venables has high praise for his guy.
“He epitomizes what you want an Oklahoma football player to look like,” Venables said. “Work ethic, accountability, dependability, reliability. He’s got all of the abilities. He certainly has a lot of gifts. But you want your best players to be your best leaders. You want guys to be about it and be doers, not takers and talking about it. He’s meek but he’s strong.
“He’s somebody that’s got a great presence to him and you don’t need to hear him talk and he don’t ever talk. You don’t need to hear him talk because what he’s all about, is very loud. Just an incredible example of what it should look like, a student-athlete.”
When Lincoln Riley announced his move to USC, a few big-named offensive players entered the transfer portal. Mims was never one, staying true to the Oklahoma program. The move has paid off as he continues to put up elite-level numbers in the offense.

Venables continues to praise Marvin Mims
Something coaches will love about any player, regardless of position, is when they can make others around them better. Venables thinks that’s something Mims brings to the table in Norman, saying he can always count of the wide receiver to perform.
“Everything he does, he autographs his work with excellence,” said Venables. “I have a lot of respect and admiration for Marvin. Low maintenance, he’s an over deliverer. You can always count on him and don’t want to take him for granted whatsoever. He’s what it’s all about. And he makes everyone around him better because of his presence.”
Mims is entering his third season with Oklahoma and based on how Venables speaks of him, won’t be around for too much longer. A bright future is there for him in the NFL. But first, he has to continue balling out against Big 12 opponents.
