Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Derek Mason has announced that he is stepping down from his current position and stepping away from college coaching.

Mason posted his announcement on Twitter, explaining that after 30 years in coaching, he needs time away to spend with his family.

“I look forward to spending time with my family to rest and reflect on opportunities within the game I love,” Mason wrote.

Prior to coming to Oklahoma State, Derek Mason spent one season as the defensive coordinator at Auburn. He was also the head coach at Vanderbilt for seven seasons, going to two bowl games and accumulating a 27-55 record during that time.

This season Oklahoma State struggled on defense, despite Mason’s knowledge and best efforts, ending the year at 89th in scoring defense.
