Garret Rangel injury update: Mike Gundy reveals how long Oklahoma State QB will be out
Oklahoma State lost their fourth consecutive game on Friday evening, falling to 3-4 and 0-4 within the Big 12 Conference due to their loss to the BYU Cougars.
Mike Gundy tried to make a change to spark the Cowboys, starting Garret Rangel over Alan Bowman at quarterback. Unfortunately, Rangel suffered serious injury during the clash with the Cougars, leading to Gundy having to turn back to Bowman during the loss.
During the second quarter of the game, Rangel was walking very gingerly as he headed to the locker room with trainers. He landed awkwardly on his left shoulder as a BYU defender tackled him in the open field.
The quarterback was seen grimacing with trainers while they were trying to get underneath his pads on the sidelines, and Paul Carcaterra of ESPN reported at the time that “trainers were having to hold that left arm to support the shoulder.”
After the dust settled on the 38-35 loss, Gundy took the podium, where he explained that he doesn’t know how long Rangel will be out, but it doesn’t look good: “He’s out. I don’t know, but he’ll be out awhile,” Gundy stated. “It’s hard to predict.”

In his return to the lineup, Bowman gave the Cowboys a chance. The former starting quarterback passed for 85 yards, one touchdown and one interception, as Ollie Gordon led the way for Oklahoma State. It was evident Gundy was impressed with his longtime quarterback’s play coming off the bench.
“I thought he played well, for the most part,” Gundy said, regarding Bowman. “Again, I’d have to watch and study it, but he came in and did a good job in that situation.”
Regardless of who the quarterback is, Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State need to figure out what’s ailing their team before it’s too late. The Cowboys next chance will be in Waco, as they’ll travel to face the Baylor Bears in Week 9.
