Oklahoma State had a serious injury to their starting quarterback on Friday night in their matchup against BYU. Shortly before the end of the second quarter, Cowboys’ quarterback Garret Rangel was walking very gingerly as he headed to the locker room with trainers. He landed awkwardly on his left shoulder as BYU tackled him in the open field. Rangel was seen grimacing with trainers trying to get underneath his pads on the sidelines. Here is the update from Paul Carcaterra of ESPN.

“Garret Rangel in a lot of pain. I was walking towards the tunnel where Oklahoma State’s locker room is and trainers were having to hold that left arm to support the shoulder, it seemed. He was walking very gingerly. Not good for Oklahoma State. I’ll talk to Mike Gundy at halftime and have a report when we come back,” Carcaterra explained.

Once he headed to the locker room, OSU quarterback Alan Bowman entered the game. It was too bad, because Garret Rangel ripped off a 56-yard run in the first half. Right before halftime, he completed 6 of 9 passes for 51 yards, while tossing one touchdown and one interception. Rangel also had five carries for 79 yards.

Oklahoma State leads BYU 21-14 at halftime. Cowboys running back Ollie Gordon II was electrifying in the first half, racking up over 100 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns. He’s one of the best running backs in college football and Gordon showed why in the first two quarters. Gordon hasn’t been nearly as productive as he has been in previous years, with just one 100-yard rushing game in 2024 (South Dakota State–126 rushing yards).

Coming out of the locker room, ESPN’s Paul Carcaterra updated Garret Rangel’s status and it appears he won’t be coming back in.

“Well it’s gonna be all Alan Bowman, Anish, moving forward. Garret Rangel has not even returned to the field. He’s still in the locker room. You saw him suffering from that upper body injury towards the left shoulder. The good news, though, Mike Gundy told me, Ollie Gordon has been terrific in the first half. Just give him the ball. Give him the ball more is what Gundy told me. And Oklahoma State as a team–175 yards rushing in the first half. That’s more than any game this season,” Carcaterra explained on the sidelines.
