As they exit their bye week, Oklahoma State has a decision to make at quarterback.

Mike Gundy discussed their ‘Poke’s plans at the position early on in his press conference on Monday. Whether it’ll be Alan Bowman, Garret Rangel, or otherwise, he said that the Cowboys will have a choice by Thursday this week after practice over the next few days ahead of their game at BYU on Friday.

“Well, we’re working all of our guys, getting them good, quality work,” said Gundy. “I told the coaches that we needed to make a decision by Thursday after practice.”

Bowman and Rangel are the two quarterbacks who have appeared this season at Oklahoma State. However, Rangel has now twice come in after a benching for Bowman over their last three games.

Bowman, the starter to this point, has had his errors throughout this as his seventh season of collegiate football. He has completed 59.3% of his passes for 1,653 yards and a dozen touchdowns. Still, he has also thrown eight interceptions, including two apiece in each of the last three games and one in each of the two games before that.

As the reserve, Rangel has checked in against Utah and then in their most recent outing against West Virginia. In those opportunities, he went 7-16 (?) for 106 yards and a touchdown that he threw on the final offensive possession against the Mountaineers.

Gundy also received a followup about Zane Flores and where he might stand at that position for the ‘Pokes.

The idle week has allowed Oklahoma State to reevaluate their quarterback spot for the second half of their season. How that ends up will be determined later this week by Gundy and the Cowboys between Bowman, Rangel, or another for who will start to end this week against the Cougars in Provo.

Gundy’s press conference moved to Zoom after headbutt by cow

Mike Gundy might need to be on the Cowboys’ injury report after taking a hit from a cow of his.

Gundy held his press conference on Zoom on Monday instead of doing it in person. He explained why.

“Well, I had a little run-in with my cattle over the weekend. And I guess they’ve been watching us play. And got headbutted. So I’ve got a bad eye that I didn’t think would be particularly enjoyable for people when they were looking at my pretty face in a live interview,” Gundy said.

“But, more importantly, it’s full of blood and I get dizzy so it’s not easy to be upright and be in a normal function. But other than that I’m doing great.”
