Mike Gundy clarifies statement suggesting he's driven under the influence: 'It was not a reference to something specific'
Mike Gundy made headlines on Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days when discussing the recent DUI arrest of Ollie Gordon. He revealed the star Oklahoma State running back will not be suspended and punishment will be handled internally.
At one point, Gundy even suggested he has driven under the influence of alcohol in the past.
” I thought, really, two or three beers, or four – I’m not justifying what Ollie did,” Gundy said. “I’m telling you what decision I made. I thought, I’ve probably done that 1,000 times in my life. Which is fine. So I got lucky. People get lucky. Ollie made a decision that he wished he could’ve done better. But when I talked to Ollie, I told him, you’re lucky. You got out light because you make a lot of money to play football.”
Not too long after leaving Alligent Stadium in Las Vegas, Gundy took to social media to clarify his comments. He said it was a broader example of making bad decisions, not a specific moment from personal experience.
“My intended point today at Big 12 media days was that we are all guilty of making bad decisions,” Gundy said via X. “It was not a reference to something specific.”
Gundy has always been known as somebody who will produce a quote. No matter the topic, he finds a way to say something interesting. Even outside of the Gordon discussion, Gundy was quick on his feet around reporters by making jokes about the upcoming presidential election.

He felt the need to clarify his comments on why Oklahoma State was not suspending Gordon, though.
Mike Gundy hoping for big things from Ollie Gordon in 2024
Gordon is undoubtedly one of the best running backs in college football and you have to assume Oklahoma State is paying him handsomely. Gundy implied as such in his quote, saying Gordon “got out light” because of his paycheck.
The Cowboys handed Gordon the ball 285 times during the 2023 season. He ran for 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns while averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Becoming a receiver was a new skill developed as well, catching 39 passes for 330 yards and a touchdown.
FCS program South Dakota State is the Oklahoma State season opener before playing host to Arkansas the following week. Gordon will be out there despite his offseason troubles, something Gundy was confident about when speaking at Big 12 Media Days.
