Mike Gundy praises his team after 29-21 win over Kansas State
Mike Gundy is proud of his team. After Oklahoma State pulled out a grueling 29-21 win over Kansas State on Friday, the Cowboys head coach praised his team’s resiliency.
“They worked their butt off the last two weeks. I’m really proud of our players, really proud of our coaches,” Gundy said following the win. “I didn’t think we did a very good job of coaching [the last two weeks]. I thought we were excellent tonight. The players bought in. They didn’t let the outside noise affect them.”
Oklahoma State’s players faced no shortage of criticism heading into the Friday night game. The was on a two-game losing streak, falling to South Alabama and Iowa State. Nonetheless, the Cowboys showed no signs of struggle against the Wildcats.
In the victory, Oklahoma State tallied 412 total yards while committing zero turnovers. Kansas State can’t say the same. The Cowboys squeezed three pivotal turnovers out of the Wildcats, including a game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter.
“We mixed up our coverages in our rush. Late in the game, we were able to get pressure on [Kansas State’s quarterback],” Gundy said. “We needed that pressure. And we had some guys make some plays. If we can put them in a decent position, they gotta make plays. Kids made good plays tonight. I was proud.”
Gundy’s pride is understandable. After all, the triumph serves as a sweet dish of revenge, as well. Last season, Kansas State walloped Oklahoma State in a 48-0 beatdown. Now, Gundy can rest easy knowing he returned the favor.

He didn’t do it alone. In the outing, linebacker Nickolas Martin tallied a ridiculous 17 tackles, a sack and an interception. Cameron Epps added two interceptions as well, including a pick-six late in the second quarter.
Oklahoma State’s offense also held its own. Running back Ollie Gordon steamrolled the Wildcats, rushing for 136 yards a touchdown. QB Alan Bowman added 235 passing yards in the winning effort. Gundy gave credit to the fans for their support, especially on an unusual Friday night contest.
“The fans and the blackout was unbelievable,” Gundy said. “Pretty impressive. This is a hell of a place to play college football and we’re a sell out now. Our people simply love Oklahoma State football and they looked awesome tonight and helped us win the game.”
Gundy and Co. will look to build on their momentum next weekend. Up next, the Cowboys will duel the Kansas Jayhawks on Oct. 14.
