Mike Gundy reaches impressive milestone after Thursday night victory
It’s hard to picture Oklahoma State without Mike Gundy as the head coach. The former Cowboys quarterback became an offensive assistant in 1990. In 2005, he was named the Oklahoma State head coach. During that time, he only spent five seasons coaching at other programs.
On Thursday night, Oklahoma State got into a shootout with Central Michigan. Ultimately, the Cowboys were able to hold onto a lead they’d built up, despite a late push from the Chippewas.
It was a win that represented a milestone moment for Mike Gundy–his 150th win as the head coach at Oklahoma State.

According to Cole Cubelic, it makes Mike Gundy one of just four current head coaches to have at least 150 wins at their current school. Nick Saban, who has won 178 games at Alabama, and Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, who also has 178 wins are at the top of the list. Meanwhile, Dabo Swinney at Clemson has 150 wins to enter the season.

During Mike Gundy’s time in Stillwater, he has been an almost larger-than-life figure, thanks in large part to his iconic mullet and his “I’m a man, I’m 40” rant. At the same time, he has also found himself in controversy from time to time. There have been reports that he feuded with Boone Pickens, the program’s most famous booster. He has also interviewed for the Tennessee job multiple times, seemingly a sign that he wants out of Oklahoma State.
At the same time, Mike Gundy has found plenty of success at Oklahoma State. He has had nine AP Top-25 finishes, including a finish as high as three in 2011. He’s also won the Fiesta Bowl twice while playing for the Cotton and Sugar as well.
Expectations are high for Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2022. As the 12th-ranked team to start the season, many people expect them to compete for a Big 12 title and potentially even more.
