Oklahoma State‘s football program made an exciting surprise announcement Wednesday as they unveiled new uniforms for the 2023-2024 season.

“Past. Present. Future.” is the mantra for the Cowboys’ new uniforms, with a design that is intended to pay homage to their historic uniforms of the past but with a modern twist. 1980s-era font was used on the front of the jersey and on the striping of the arm sleeves, with jersey numbers appearing on the shoulders of the uniform for the first time since 2005.

There may be elements from the past on OSU’s new threads, but the uniforms look far from outdated, and can be seen below.

The 1980’s were a special time in Stillwater, as some of the greatest players in school history like Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Hart Lee Dykes, and current head coach Mike Gundy brought the program some of its fondest memories and its richest history. And OSU wanted to pay homage to that time period with their new uniforms.

“To positive reviews, Oklahoma State has worn throwback versions of the uniforms from the late 1980s for special occasions in recent years. The Cowboys’ debuted orange throwback jerseys for a game against Texas in 2018 to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of Sanders winning the Heisman Trophy. Two years later, OSU wore white throwback uniforms against West Virginia to commemorate Thurman Thomas’s induction into the Cowboy Football Ring of Honor,” OSU stated in a press release revealing the new uniforms. “The 2023 season marks a commitment to that as the Cowboys’ base look, with the notable update to OSU’s current marks and brand standards.”

A modern characteristic that the Cowboys’ have adopted with their uniforms in recent history is variety, which they’ve continued to uphold in their latest upgrades. The Cowboys have orange, black, and white pants and jerseys, giving them a variety of different options and unform combinations to explore on a week-to-week basis. They even have two different white jerseys, one with orange letters and numbers and one with black.

The uniforms were made using Nike FUSE (Field Utility Special Edition) technology, technology that is only being used by a select group of schools in 2023. The lightweight uniforms have thermal regulation technology, combining research-backed innovation and precision fit.

Oklahoma State’s new uniforms can be seen in action for the first time on September 2, when they take on Central Arkansas in their opening game of the season.
