Oklahoma State guard John-Michael Wright is returning to the Cowboys and using his extra year of eligibility, he told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. He just wrapped up his first season with the program after transferring from High Point.

Wright started all 36 games for Oklahoma State this past season, averaging 9.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. That was two years removed from his best season at High Point in which he averaged 20.7 points per game and pulled down 5.2 boards per contest.

One of Wright’s biggest moments of the season came Feb. 8 when he tipped in the game-winning shot to send Oklahoma State past Texas Tech. In that game, he had eight points and six rebounds in 23 minutes to lead the Cowboys to the victory.

Oklahoma State is coming off a 20-16 overall record in 2022-23, including an 8-10 mark in Big 12 play. The Cowboys just missed out on the NCAA Tournament as one of the first four out, which is why they ended up playing in the NIT. They fell to North Texas in the quarterfinal round.

After the season, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton said his team didn’t reach its goal of playing in the big dance and acknowledged took the fall for it.

“As far as the season, obviously fell short of our ultimate team goals, which is obviously playing in the NCAA tournament, and not just getting there, but having a team that’s capable of having success,” Boynton said after the season, via Poke Report. “There were a lot of reasons why that happened. Some of it was outside of control, but there were several things that we could’ve done better to ensure our position. Ultimately, that’s on me and it’s my job to put our program in position that we are not on that line, or fighting the last couple of weeks, but that we have consistent success throughout the year.”

The Cowboys are also awaiting decisions on Avery Anderson and Kalib Boone, who have both played four years and have the extra COVID-19 year if they want to use it. They’re also set to return leading scorer Bryce Thompson, who averaged 11.8 points per game and dropped 22 points in the second round of the NIT to lead Oklahoma State past Eastern Washington.

With Wright back in the fold, OK State now has its fourth-leading scorer back in the fold.
