No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling remains undefeated with 21-12 win over No. 4 Iowa State

Oklahoma State (10-0) earned a 21-12 win over Iowa State (10-2) to remain unbeaten on the season. The Cowboys controlled toss up bouts to cruise in the end.

Heck, some young bucks even got their time to shine late in the match to clinch things for Oklahoma State. While Iowa State’s big guns got their wins, it wasn’t enough.

Here’s how the dual meet broke down Saturday night.

125: No. 20 Troy Spratley (OKST) dec. 4-2 over No. 25 Kysen Terukina (ISU). OKST leads 3-0

Spratley got the scoring going after two minutes of hand fighting in the neutral position. He ended up getting a takedown on the edge and went up 3-0. Terukina would get an escape point before the end of the period and led the second period with one as well, making it 3-2.

Spratley started the third period on bottom and earned an escape to go up 4-2. Late in the match, both guys went back and forth as things got a little chippy. Terukina struggled to get in deep enough on shots. Oklahoma State would get on the board first.

133: No. 3 Daton Fix (OKST) MD over No. 7 Evan Frost (ISU). OKST leads 7-0

Fix didn’t waste any time with a quick slide by for a takedown and a 3-0 lead in the first 10 seconds of the match. Frost would earn an escape to cut the lead down to two points. Late in the first period, Fix won the hand fight and earned another takedown and a 6-1 lead.

Frost only got an escape in the second period but there was no additional scoring. Fix would open the third with an escape to take a 7-2 lead and followed up with a takedown halfway through the period and a 10-2 lead. Fix would retain riding time despote Frost getting an escape and get the major decision.

141: No. 9 Tagen Jamison (OKST) dec. 4-1 in SV over No. 8 Anthony Echemendia (ISU). OKST leads 10-0

Echemendia, with less than a minute to go in the first period, had numerous opportunities at a takedown, but Jamison showed off his defense and was able to keep it scoreless.

In the second period, Ehemendia started on bottom and earned the escape to take a 1-0 lead. Jamison would keep pushing the pace and forced a stall call on the Cyclone. Echemendia followed it up with a shot of his own. 

Jamison opened the third period with an escape to tie the match 1-1. The two were in a scramble with 1:30 to go, fighting for top position. Echemendia had another deep single leg but couldn’t finish it by grabbing across the body. However, the Cyclone was pushing the pace and drew a stall call. The match would go to sudden victory. After trading shots, Jamison finally got in deep on a single and switched to a double and drove through for the winning takedown to get the 4-1 decision .

149: No. 10 Casey Swiderski (ISU) dec. 8-2 over No. 17 Sammy Alvarez (OKST). OKST leads 10-3

Swiderski had the opening takedown, but it was Alvarez getting back on the board with an escape and cut the lead 3-1 within the first three minutes. Swiderski opened the second period with an escape and took a 4-1 lead over Alvarez.

Going into the third period, Alvarez got out to cut the lead 4-2 early on. But it was Swiderski who pushed the pace. He forced Alvarez’s second stall call, giving the Cyclone another point. Then, he followed it up with another takedown to get the 8-2 decision, giving Iowa State its first win of the night.

157: No. 18 Teague Travis (OKST)dec. 8-3 over Jason Kraisser (ISU). OKST leads 13-3

Travis had to really work for a takedown as it took til the final minute of the first period. Once he solidified it, he went up 3-0 before a Kraisser escape. GOing to the second, Kraisser escaped to start the second frame.

However, Travis didn’t waste any time as he landed another takedown to take a 6-2 lead. Kraisser would escape to cut the lead down to a one takedown match. Going to the third period, both guys went into a long scramble. Eventually, Travis earned the reversal after starting on bottom and clinched an 8-3 win, extending the Cowboy lead.

165: No. 3 David Carr (ISU) dec. 8-1 over No. 4 Izzak Olejnik (OKST). OKST leads 13-6

Carr got it going first in the first period with a takedown and a 3-0 lead. Olejnik would get the escape point to start the second period but Carr was well in control. Eventually, Carr landed another takedown to take a 6-1 lead in the second period.

In the third, Carr started on bottom and managed to get an escape to take a 7-1 lead over the Cowboy wrestler. Amid a lot of hand fighting on the feet, Carr couldn’t land another takedown but earned a riding time point at the end of regulation.

174: No. 23 MJ Gaitan (ISU) dec. 6-3 in SV over No. 25 Brayden Thompson (OKST). OKST leads 13-9

The first period was back and forth but neither wrestler could finish a takedown and ended the first three minutes scoreless. The opening of the second period was wild though.

Gaitan earned the reversal to take a 2-0 lead, but Thompson wanted to get back on top. He did with a reversal of his own and tied it up. Gaitan would escape to take a 3-2 lead with 1:10 to go in the second. Neither man found offense the rest of the period and Thompson chose down in the third, which led to an escape and a tie match 3-3. The evenly matched guys remained tied going to sudden victory.

Gaitan appeared to get the winning takedown with 1:14 to go in the sudden victory period, but the call was challenged. He appeared to lift up Thompson while both were out of bounds. However, after review, the call stood and Iowa State got a much needed victory.

184: No. 2 Dustin Plott (OKST) MD 17-3 over No. 10 Will Feldkamp (ISU). OKST leads 17-9

Plott wasted no time by getting in on a shot and led 3-0 within the first 10 seconds of the bout. Plott’s ride kept going as Feldkamp desperately tried to escape. Feldkamp could not get out and Plott opened the second period with an escape to take a 4-0 lead.

After working through positions, Plott managed to land another takedown and took a 7-0 lead. Feldkamp opened the third period with an escape but Plott was right back on the attack. He got a takedown followed by a Feldkamp escape made it 10-2. But then the Cowboy poured it on with another takedown and escape sequence, making it 13-3. Then, with 20 seconds left, Plott got another one to take a 16-3 lead and added riding time.

197: Jersey Robb (OKST) MD 15-5 over No. 30 Julien Broderson (ISU). OKST leads 21-9

Robb, a freshman, filled in for Luke Surber and opened up with a takedown just a little under two minutes into the match. Broderson earned the escape to cut the lead 3-1. Broderson went for a throw off his underhook and front head lock.

However, his lateral drop was countered by Robb, who turned it into a takedown and four near fall points to take a 10-1 lead. Broderson got an escape point to start the second period. But then Robb got in on the attack, but he was countered by Broderson to cut the lead 10-5. Robb would get the escape to extend the lead 11-5. To start the third period, Robb got out for a 12-5 lead but Broderson kept threatening throws off tie ups.

As Broderson chased him, Robb eventually slid by his opponent for one more takedown and the 15-5 major decision.

285: No. 3 Yonger Bastida (ISU) dec. 7-2 over No. 9 Konner Doucet (OKST). OKST wins 21-12

Bastida and Doucet were deadlocked at zero after the first three minutes of action. Both tried to find their openings but were both stout defensively.

Bastida started the second period on bottom but Doucet’s ride was controlling through the first 30 seconds. However, he did not get over one minute as Bastida escaped. The Cyclone added a takedown to take a 4-0 lead into the third period. Doucet opened with an escape to cut the lead 4-1 but Bastida stayed aggressive. After a scramble, Bastida earned another takedown and a 7-1 lead before Doucet got one last escape.
