Report: Oklahoma State benches Alan Bowman for Garret Rangel
Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy has decided his offense needs a spark. With that, the team is benching starting quarterback Alan Bowman for Garret Rangel, according to Ashton Slaughter of the O’Colly. The report states it will be Zane Flores backing up Rangel, not Bowman.
This comes amid a three-game losing streak for Oklahoma State to start Big 12 play. During those three games, the Cowboys haven’t been able to score more than 20 points in a single game. For his part, Bowman has struggled in those games, throwing six interceptions while only completing 52 of 102 passing attempts.
Bowman is in his seventh season of college football and his second season at Oklahoma State. He has previous stops at Michigan and Texas Tech. He was initially a three-star recruit in the Class of 2018 and the 170th-ranked quarterback recruit overall, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
For his career, Bowman has played in 46 games, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 10,442 yards and 61 touchdowns. However, turnovers have been an issue in his career, particularly at Oklahoma State. He has 40 career interceptions, including 22 in 20 games with the Cowboys.
Earlier in the season, Gundy made the decision to bench Bowman for the second half of the Utah game. That came amid struggles for both Bowman and the offense as a whole. At the time, he was replaced by Rangel. That game also saw Rangel struggle, only completing three of 11 passes for 31 yards. However, he did avoid turnovers better than Bowman.

This comes amid struggles for the Oklahoma State Cowboys as a whole. Averaging 390.2 yards per game, Oklahoma State is 71st in the country in total offense. Then, at 30.2 points per game, the Cowboys are 62nd in scoring offense. However, that average is largely thanks to non-conference play. In Big 12 play, Oklahoma State is averaging 17.6 points per game.
For his part, Rangel came to Oklahoma State out of high school as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2022. He was the 17th-ranked quarterback in that cycle after playing his high school football at Lone Star in Frisco, Texas.
In his time at Oklahoma State, Rangel has completed 50.9 percent of passes for 1,024 yards and seven touchdowns to six interceptions.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys get a much-needed bye week in Week 7 before hitting the road for a tough battle against a good BYU team. The Cowboys are going to need to find a spark on offense in that game or it’ll be an uphill battle for Oklahoma State to get its first win in Big 12 play this season.
