Oklahoma State is expected to hire Utah State co-offensive coordinator Cooper Bassett as its offensive line coach, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

Bassett played tight end and defensive end for the Cowboys from 2009-12 and is a native of Tuttle, Oklahoma. He was a team captain as a senior and went on to graduate with a bachelor’s in science from the university.

Bassett arrived at Utah State in 2023 as the offensive line coach before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator ahead of this past season. He helped the Aggies rank fourth in the Mountain West in scoring and third in total offense while finishing 4-8 in 2024.

Prior to his two-year stint at Utah State, Bassett was the offensive line coach for Sam Houston State in 2022. He helped the Bearkats average 162.3 yards per game (4.4 yards per attempt), while also finishing first in the Western Athletic Conference in sacks allowed (two per game).

Bassett also brings experience as an offensive line coach at Southeast Missouri (2021), where he coached a 1,000-yard rusher in Geno Hess, and West Texas A&M (2017-20).

Andrew Mitchell expected to join Cooper Bassett as co-offensive line coach

It was later reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Bassett is expected to be co-offensive line coach with Andrew Mitchell, who spent this past year at New Mexico State. He was the OL coach, run game coordinator and also served as an interim play caller for the Aggies.

Under Mitchell’s direction, New Mexico State averaged 180 rushing yards per game in 2023 and rushed for 200 or more yards six times. The Cowboys, by comparison, rushed for just 111.6 yards per game to rank 116th in the country.

Mitchell is a native of Choctaw, Oklahoma who also played under Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State from 2008-10. He played offensive line for the Cowboys before going on to a brief NFL career.

Mitchell later went on to become a graduate assistant for Houston and North Carolina as well as serving on the TCU staff. He later became the head coach at Snow College in Utah, where he began his college career before joining OSU.

Bassett and Mitchell will join an offense led by offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, who is also a Cowboys alum.
