Vanderbilt transfer defensive lineman De’Marion Thomas has committed to Oklahoma State. Thomas spent the past two seasons the with Commodores and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Thomas started all 13 games this past season at defensive tackle and finished with 34 tackles and one sack. He played in 10 games off the bench the previous season as a true freshman.

Thomas attended Tulsa Union (OK) High School, where he was a three-star prospect in the 2023 class. He ranked as the No. 759 overall player and No. 80 defensive lineman in the cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

His value has gone up slightly with his performance the past two seasons in Nashville, as he ranks as the No. 567 overall player and No. 45 defensive lineman in On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings. He now returns to his home state where he will look to help turn around a Cowboys team that finished 3-9 for their worst record in 20 season under coach Mike Gundy.

Including Thomas, OSU has now signed 30 players through both the fall and spring portal this offseason. The Cowboys recently added South Carolina transfer edge rusher Wendell Gregory, a former four-star recruit in high school.

OSU ranked fifth in the Big 12 in total sacks last season with 25, but was one of the worst run defenses in the conference with 5.4 yards allowed per carry. Perhaps the additions it has made on its defensive line can be a step toward correcting that in 2025.

The spring transfer portal opened Wednesday, April 16 and will close 10 days later on Friday, April 25. As of this writing, more than 430 FBS scholarship players have entered the transfer portal this month and 3,600 players have entered in the 2024-25 portal.

More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
