Ole Miss remains one of the few programs that still has not named a starting quarterback two games into the season. Lane Kiffin has maintained that both Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer will continue on until he is certain with his guy. With a unique experience like this for the players, they’re both doing their best to push through it. It’s a lot according to Dart but he’s just trying his best to power through the circumstances.

Dart spoke about the ongoing QB competition after the Rebel’s win over Central Arkansas. He came off the bench against the Bears after starting the opener against Troy. He says it can mess with him mentally but he’s trying to avoid the outside noise the best he can.

“Honestly, it’s kind of a whirlwind that you go through mentally,” said Dart. “There’s definitely times where you have a really good day and then there’s a day where you might not do your best or how you wanted to play so. For me, I try not to read into things sometimes.”

Dart finished his second game in Oxford with a 10/15 outing for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns. That came after going 18/27 against the Trojans in his debut for 154 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Even with that production from the sophomore, Altmyer is still in the competition with 7/15 passing for 103 yards, three total touchdowns, and an interception. Dart is all for the competition because he and Altmyer are playing for the same thing. It can take a toll but it’s something that, in the end, should make them both better.

“Anytime there’s a competition like this, we both are going after the same thing. We’re working really hard at it and we’re pushing each other,” said Dart. “There’s definitely times where your head gets a little foggy but you just gotta just try to keep pushing through.”

Kiffin will eventually have to make a call between the two. With both having earned a start, the next starter against Georgia Tech may say a lot about who is the man for Ole Miss. Until then, all Jaxson Dart can do is wait. He’ll continue to play to the best of his abilities and then leave the decision in Kiffin’s hands.
