Lane Kiffin critical of particular offensive play-calling during Ole Miss Spring Game
Lane Kiffin was not necessarily a fan of Ole Miss’ play calling during the spring game. The Rebels coach didn’t want to show too much in a scrimmage between the team.
It’s not everything new Ole Miss wanted to debut in 2023, but Kiffin would’ve held back a little bit. He attributed it to a national television environment for a spring period that doesn’t mean too much in the grand scheme of things.
All in all, Kiffin didn’t seem too concerned with revealing extra offensive sets.
“We didn’t necessarily, with games on TV, we’re not going to go show everything that we’re doing,” Kiffin said. “And sometimes you have some young aggressive play callers that get really excited. When they get to call plays in spring games, remember the teams are divided. So it’s not like Charlie and Pete called all the plays today. So sometimes, they forget the big picture of things I got like they’re looking through a straw.
“You know, all they see is, you know, everybody’s looking at them and they want to make their big debut and play calling versus the big picture of things, which is my job to do. And so, I would not have shown some of the plays that they did, but you know, it’s all right.”

Lane Kiffin explains Ole Miss’ effectiveness in transfer portal
Things could certainly change from now and the beginning of the season. Kiffin explained how Ole Miss was effective in the transfer portal.
“I think the portal, much like free agents in professional sports, they look at the immediate,” Kiffin said. “I may be signing a one- or two-year contract in free agency, I’m not looking at being there four to five years. So you may look at it differently. I’m not saying what places are better, but you may look at, ‘Hey, it’s a lot more important how do I get featured in the offense or defense I play in?’ vs. ‘Where do I live? How close am I to my family to come to games?
“I think we’ve had a lot of success because kids have looked at ‘I’m going to play for that staff, this is how I fit in their offensive, defensive system,’ and a lot of these guys that you look at, they were guys that weren’t coming to Ole Miss out of high school. They weren’t coming to Ole Miss.”
