Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was quick to share his disappointment in the Rebels after their recent mock game, calling out their effort. Kiffin criticized his team for not playing up to expectations, and noted that his quarterback competition didn’t have a winner of any kind after a poor showing. Ole Miss continues to face a decision at quarterback while Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart both compete to fill the vacancy left behind by Matt Corral.

Lane Kiffin critical of Ole Miss mock game

“I would say in the mock game, in general, I don’t think we played great,” said Kiffin. “I don’t think that — as much as we try to create a game day atmosphere and routine and get players to play really hard — sometimes it happens without a crowd. I did not think we played great in all three phases by any means. You know, actually, the other team played harder. So we showed them that today. That’s why you’ve gotta show up every game no matter who you’re playing because that was our service team and the game was a lot closer than it should’ve been.”

Kiffin didn’t hesitate to jump into one of the biggest conversations surrounding Ole Miss after critiquing his team — offering to answer the first question he would be asked before anyone had a chance to ask it.

“And I’ll beat you to your first question. We still have not made a quarterback decision. I think they both played okay. I would’ve thought, again, we would’ve performed better in that situation against the other team. And so, we’ll keep plugging away. I do not know when I’ll have that answer. We haven’t even discussed a timeline as coaches because it has not emerged at all.”

Players hate to hear from their coach how disappointed they are with them after a tough practice, but hearing that they might have let a starting opportunity slip by may sting harder for Altmyer and Dart. Luckily for Kiffin and the Rebels, they may have a little bit of extra time to figure out their decision — as they open their season against Troy and Central Arkansas on their home field.
