Lane Kiffin explains unique approach to social media
Few coaches are as entertaining on social media as Lane Kiffin, something that inevitably gets him into trouble from time to time with his program’s brass, who would probably prefer a toned-down version.
But Kiffin just wanted to be himself.
“I think I took a different approach than most coaches, which is kind of what I do in a lot of areas when it comes to social media, especially Twitter,” Kiffin said at SEC Media Days. “I just started it and I was like I kind of want to feel like a normal person and comment just like if I was a normal person, or retweet things without having a meeting with my SID before where we figure out whether this is a proper thing to tweet that everybody will like and stuff.”
Kiffin’s trolling jobs on social media have become well-known in college football media circles.
They’ve ranged from urging Kirby Smart to diet a little better, to trolling Auburn over a recruiting graphic, to trolling Florida after flipping a commitment from the Gators.
That’s all just Lane being Lane on social media.
“It just started. It wasn’t a master plan,” Kiffin said. “Kind of like Juice’s Twitter, it just fell together and then I just kind of ran with it and embraced it.”
Juice, of course, referring to Kiffin’s dog, which has its own Twitter account. Juice has some good-natured tweets from time to time.

But typically they don’t hold a candle to the juice Kiffin brings when he fires up the old social media account and gets to typing. The Ole Miss coach is a lightning rod in college football, to say the least.
Largely to the benefit of the sport’s onlookers.
Thankfully, the sports information directors haven’t been able to curb Kiffin’s Twitter usage just yet. No signing off on his every move, to the delight of his audience of nearly 630,000 followers on Twitter.
“If I did that I wouldn’t be tweeting very much,” Kiffin said.
