Lane Kiffin explains why he foresees a larger role for Ole Miss TE Michael Trigg
Ole Miss tight end Michael Trigg only appeared in four games as a freshman at USC. But when thrown to, the former four-star and top-200 player in the 2021 class showed why he deserved blue-chip honors in high school. He caught seven passes in those four games played a year ago, good for 109 yards and a touchdown. Stellar numbers in limited snaps for the freshman. Now, as a sophomore, Lane Kiffin is ready to see the big pass catcher break through.
Two games into the 2022 season and Trigg is on schedule. He already surpassed his catch total from 2021 in just two contests this fall, hauling in nine passes for 61 yards, three of which resulting touchdowns. So he’s scoring every third time he touches the ball this season — and there’s been no shortage of touches.
He actually scored all three of his touchdowns this past weekend. Against Central Arkansas, the Ole Miss offense as a whole had a field day en route to hanging 59 points on the outclassed Bears, and Trigg was a primary contributor. He only recorded 28 total yards on five catches, but was lethal when he put his paws on the football, scoring six on three of five catches.

That sort of performance is exactly what Lane Kiffin believed Trigg was capable of. Here was the Rebels head honcho after the game, singing Trigg’s praises and explaining why he can dominate every week just like that.

“Well at first, you see he’s bigger. He’s played bigger than that in scrimmages. And so, you know, there’s some inconsistency there because he’s a young player. He needs to play more consistent, because you can see the big play potential and. And I do like that he seemed — you know, his last touchdown, he kind of played harder and with more urgency in the second half there.”
So, exactly the type of play Kiffin expected out of Trigg. Now, it’s just up to the young tight end to come through with that sort of performance every week. Perhaps three touchdowns is a bit much to ask for on a regular basis. But Trigg can certainly use his physical traits like he did on those catches.
Call it a breakout for Ole Miss tight end Michael Trigg. With plenty more in store.
