Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin offered a grim injury update following Tuesday’s spring practice. The Rebels were without several receivers and tight ends as they went through a spring scrimmage, which Kiffin said made things difficult.

The coach did not list any player by name or reveal the nature of any of the injuries. He did, however, elaborate slightly on a timetable for their eventual return.

“There were a lot of injuries for whatever reason, especially offensively skilled,” Kiffin said after practice. “So that affected production in the scrimmage. Receivers and especially tight end, we just didn’t have any. So that made it challenging, but we’re just pushing through. I don’t think most of them are long term. They should be guys we get back.”

Although news of an injury is something you never want to hear, it’s at least somewhat comforting to know the affected players will be back at some point. Until another injury update is provided, it sounds like Ole Miss will have to get creative as it finishes up spring practice in anticipation for its annual spring game on April 23.

Lane Kiffin on transfer tight end Michael Trigg

Ole Miss tight end Michael Trigg is getting first-team work this spring – and a lot of praise from his new head coach, Lane Kiffin. Last week, a video Kiffin posted of Trigg dunking on his son Knox went viral, prompting even more conversation about the former USC tight end’s skills.

The Rebels head coach compared Trigg on the field to an older player coming down to play with the junior high kids.

“He’s just a unique skillset,” Kiffin said. “Knox was here and we were talking about it afterward, I was trying to describe what it looks like, it’s kind of like when an older guy plays with the younger guys like in junior high, that’s kind of how he plays. It’s not necessarily faster or quicker than everybody but his ball control, his length, he just looks like he’s older, even though he’s younger, he’s a freshman.”

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound freshman played in just four games this past season with the Trojans, totaling seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. He opted to transfer after the coaching switch in Los Angeles and found a home alongside his former teammate, quarterback Jaxson Dart.

After leaving USC, Michael Trigg was the No. 38 overall prospect in the portal, per On3’s transfer portal rankings. He was also the second-ranked tight end available.
