Ole Miss is entering the second week of their fall camp. They’ll now start to shift their focus from evaluation to the season at hand. Lane Kiffin has several new pieces to work with and a lot to learn still about his new team. While he saw a little of everything during their scrimmage, Kiffin says he still isn’t sure what he has on his hands.

Kiffin broke down his team’s play from their scrimmage during media on Monday. He said he was indifferent and will only know more by seeing his group compete.

“I mean this kind of sounds coach speak but there were good things, there were bad things. It was kind of in the middle on everything. Whether it’s offense, defense or position groups where you kind of get excited about some things and you’re still nervous about others,” said Kiffin. “I can’t really tell you where we are right now. We’re just giving everybody chances and evaluating not by what you’ve done before or your stars in recruiting or anything.”

Of the things Kiffin did note, he credited the depth at defensive line the Rebels are enjoying. He also said injuries showed off depth in the secondary. On offense, he credited the new receivers, running backs and tight ends for how quickly they’re picking up the offense.

It was just their first scrimmage so Ole Miss still has a ways to go before opening kickoff. Kiffin realizes that and knows they still have time to make that shift in their mindset.

“We still have a good, solid week here where we’re still in training camp mode and another scrimmage before we really start to get out of that and more into the season mode,” Kiffin said.

Leave it to Lane Kiffin to keep us guessing just about two weeks out from their opener against Troy. Whether the product is good, bad or neutral by then remains to be seen when it comes to this new-look Rebels team.
