Lane Kiffin believes the SEC is a different animal compared to the rest of college football, and that should factor into Ole Miss‘ resume for the College Football Playoff.

The Rebels seemed to be headed to the expanded 12-team dance, but a third loss suffered in Week 13 against the Florida Gators might’ve been the final nail in the coffin for their hopes. They rebounded nicely with a win in the Egg Bowl in Week 14, but they’re going to need some serious help regardless.

Throughout the 2024 campaign, the SEC has cannibalized each other, and some have wondered whether it’s fair to dock them for an extra loss or two while playing in a tougher conference. Speaking with the media, Kiffin elaborated on whether it’s something the decision-makers must consider.

“I don’t know. I’m not going to really do that,” Kiffin responded, asked what he would say if he had a chance to speak to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee regarding Ole Miss’ resume. “Just watch the games (Saturday) and see how that unfolds. Maybe then, you know. But I don’t know. I was kind of lost in this game. Just making sure we won this game. On the radio show, really, my comments about the SEC, it just — I’m not going to politick for us. But the SEC is just different.

“It’s different when you play — when you go and play in these places. You’ve got to go on the road. Like, those three upsets last week, that are on Senior Day, at three of the hardest, probably, ten places in the country to play. Some other conferences might go the entire year without playing in a place like that. So, it’s just different.”

Non-SEC fans might be miffed by Lane Kiffin’s comments, but he has a point to an extent. Still, wins and losses are what matter most to the Selection Committee, and his team has three of them.

The odds may not be in Ole Miss’ favor, but the Rebels shouldn’t hang their heads regardless, as 2024 was another awesome season, even if it might not end a trip to the College Football Playoff.
