Lane Kiffin still hasn’t named a starting quarterback for Ole Miss through two weeks of the 2022 season, letting both Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer split the reps thus far.

The Rebels have been able to find victory in two games thus far, defeating Troy and Central Arkansas to begin their season. However, the schedule is about to get a little less forgiving, beginning Week 3 with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Speaking to the media after their 59-3 victory on Saturday, Kiffin provided some insight into whether he’s seen enough from his quarterback duo to name a starting quarterback.

“We’ll have to go watch the film,” stated Kiffin. “I felt back for Luke because he was injured, and he’s so competitive that he stayed in, even when we asked him. I think you could see on the interception, obviously there was an issuer there.

“So we’ll go back and look at the film and see what we think.”

During Saturday’s victory, Dart completed 10 of 15 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Altmyer passed for 90 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while completing 6 of 13 passes on the night.

Whether Jaxon Dart or Luke Altmyer is starting for the remainder of the season for Ole Miss, there will be some lofty expectations placed on their shoulders.

Lane Kiffin evaluates risk of playing multiple QBs, concern of transfers

Moreover,  head coach Lane Kiffin spoke at last week’s SEC coaches teleconference about his in-season quarterback competition. Kiffin discussed the good and the bad that comes with the battle, as Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart continue to compete for the starting quarterback job for the Rebels.

“It makes guys competitive,” Kiffin said. “You’ve got to keep working. Obviously I’m not going to try to say it’s the best thing because you’d like to know and have players with rhythm and everything. It is what it is. We’ve still got to find the best guy.”

Kiffin was also asked if he was worried about the sensitivity of the situation, and if he was concerned that whoever lost the job and had to be the backup quarterback may transfer out of Ole Miss.

“I’m not,” said Kiffin. “In our decision making, that has nothing to do with it. I realize that’s out there and a possibility with all these kids, but I can’t let that be how we’re deciding.”

Hopefully for Kiffin and the Rebels, following this weekend they will have a starter for the season that can get into their rhythm in time for the start of the SEC schedlue, as well as a backup moving forward.
