College athletics have been going through a series of major changes, including the one-time transfer rule, conference realignment, and NIL. Now, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has given his thoughts on what he sees as an ominous future for college football.

“I don’t think it will be (better) because maybe I’m not a traditionalist in a lot of areas because you have to evolve in how you run programs and change on offense,” Lane Kiffin said. “But I think for rivalries to be broken up and people that have been in conferences for so long, like these four major teams have to move like they are.

“I don’t know,” Lane Kiffin continued. “Obviously it’s about money. And, you know, if it wasn’t about money they wouldn’t be doing it. So, I don’t think it’s really good for the history of college football.”

Lane Kiffin was targeting his ire at the recent conference realignment moves. In particular, Kiffin is targeting the four big brands moving; Oklahoma, Texas, USC, and UCLA. Rightly so, he points out that these are moves made with financial concerns in mind and not the sport’s tradition.

How much these moves change the sport remains to be seen. Nobody knows for sure how the game will be viewed or could change, though like Lane Kiffin many people have their suspicions. Others, meanwhile, have argued that future generations won’t know anything else, so it won’t matter to them.
