New USC Trojans assistant coach hire Rob Ryan has introduced himself with a long and rambling rant where he both praised the program. Now, other coaches, like Lane Kiffin, are chiming in with their thoughts on the rant.

Kiffin, the head coach at Ole Miss, joked about the rant on Twitter/X, suggesting that the assistants in Los Angeles need their own TV show. You can look at that post, here:

“Someone sent me and said is this real or A.I. I said that’s definitely real Just Rob being Rob. Should have his own TV show,” Kiffin posted. “@uscfb.”

Rob Ryan is joining the USC staff as the assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach. It’s also his first job in college since 1999 when he was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. It certainly now seems to be an opportunity that he’s excited for this season.

In his rant, Ryan discussed everything from the coaching staff, notably including defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn. Then, quarterback Jayden Maiava.

“Watch where we finish this year. This guy [Lynn] is special. He’s special, he knows how to get it done. He’s a great communicator, great teacher, he’s fun to be around. He makes everybody better, including the coaches. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to the – what do you call it, spring ball or whatever? I can’t wait. We’re gonna go against the best? Oh, good. Bring it on. Let’s see. I can’t wait to see that little JUCO kid from Hutch – bam, we’re gonna get after you. But anyway, it’ll be great. We’re excited,” Ryan said.

“I saw the Maiava guy – I coached his uncle. I hated that kid when I first had him. That USC kid. The little captain. Remember, he could walk under this table right here. Little guy. We draft this little runt. I’m like, ‘Oh, man.’ This guy. I was all over this kid during the OTAs. Man, this guy.”

Rob Ryan then explained that when taking a vacation, being able to use Jayden Maiava’s name even recently came in handy.

“I’ve never been to Maui,” Ryan recalled. “I run things in Oahu, but I’m gonna go to Maui. He’s like, ‘Hey, Rob. You get in any kid of trouble now, you just tell them you know Kaluks.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna tell them I know Kaluks. Get the hell out of here.’ I walk out there, do the usual. … Now, they’re out of cars. I’m in Maui, I’ve got no car. So what do I do? ‘I know Kaluks.’ I got a car – ‘Oh, you know Kaluks?’ Swear to God, hand to God, true story. I got a van, I’m like, ‘Yeah, Kaluks. My man.’ Anyway, I ended up loving the kid. Oh, man, is he mean as a rattlesnake and there’s a reason why that kid was captain with all those first-round draft choices. I love that guy. Looks can be deceiving.”

If any coach would understand why Rob Ryan was excited to be at USC, it would be Lane Kiffin. A former offensive assistant with the Trojans himself, Kiffin was an assistant there during the Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart years. He would later become the head coach from 2010 to 2013.

Kiffin is also right, the Ryan family is among the best known families in football and everyone, including his brother Rex Ryan, are known for their big personalities. So, a reality TV show might not be the worst idea for them.
