Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin poked fun at a post on Twitter Thursday that suggested Mike Leach and Deion Sanders — the head coaches at Mississippi State and Jackson State, respectively — were the two best head coaches in the state of Mississippi.

On Tuesday, Sanders was spotted in Starkville, visiting Leach and the Bulldogs for their practice. Still repping his Jackson State gear, Prime Time gave a smile and a thumbs up from the sidelines. After a picture of Leach and Sanders surfaced in Leach’s office, Barstool’s “Unnecessary Roughness” posted the photo with a caption, “two best coaches in the state of Mississippi.” But Kiffin was quick to poke fun at the duo by flexing his Egg Bowl trophy from this past year, when the Rebels defeated the Mississppi State Bulldogs.

Lane Kiffin provides spring practice update, goals for new transfers

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has welcomed the transfer portal as a key part of his roster-building process when filling out the veteran roster heading into spring practice. His approach has changed the way things look on and off the field this time of year from how college football used to operate.

During his Tuesday press conference, Lane Kiffin explained how the presence of so many transfer portal additions has changed spring practice for his team as they look to build for the 2022 season.

“It’s almost like it used to be in the fall,” said Kiffin. “Before all the mid-years and you had all the new guys in the fall to look at. Spring usually is not this way, but with the portal and all the guys – new guys – it’s pretty exciting to be able to go out there and look at all the guys. It used to just be basically high school guys that were a long way away, now you’ve got guys that have already played and should have significant roles. It’s pretty exciting.”

Ole Miss brought in several transfers to help fill the void left by its outgoing players, allowing for an immediate impact in those positions. Offensive stars Jaxson Dart (USC) and Zach Evans (TCU) will join forces in the backfield to help lead the Rebels in the air and on the ground after the departure of potential first-round pick Matt Corral. Both Dart and Evans rank in the top-10 in the transfer portal rankings, with Dart, checking in as the No. 2-rated transfer and Evans as the No. 8-ranked. Tight end Michael Trigg (USC) is another instant impact player who has received early praise from the coaching staff.

Six of the transfers landed by Kiffin and the Rebels are ranked among the top-40 in the 2022 transfer cycle.
