As fall camp progresses, injuries are inevitable. However, through the first couple weeks of Ole Miss‘ fall practices, they’re largely avoided any major injuries to key players. While that’s always subject to change, head coach Lane Kiffin did reveal a tidbit about any lingering nicks and bruises going around the locker room.

“I think in typical fashion, you know, the assumption as you tackle, you’re gonna have all these injuries,” Kiffin said Monday. “Almost all of our injuries are prior to the scrimmage, not during the scrimmage. There’s not really many new ones and I do not think there’s there’s really any long-term ones.”

Since injuries were the least of Kiffins’ worries, he turned his attention to the Rebels’ quarterback battle ll between Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer. Kiffin, however, didn’t sound too thrilled with their performances in this past Saturday’s scrimmage.

In a post-scrimmage press conference, Kiffin gave a blunt assessment of the two players’ performances as they compete to replace Matt Corral as the Rebels’ starting quarterback.

“I thought the first two guys [Dart and Altmyer] didn’t play great and took too many sacks — even though we’re not hitting them, that would’ve been sacks,” Kiffin told reporters.

Dart is gearing up for his first season in Oxford after leaving USC via the transfer portal. He appeared in six games last year as a true freshman, throwing for 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns. But he’s competing with Altmyer, who played in four games as Corral’s backup and threw for 192 yards and a touchdown in that time.

While the general consensus feels that Dart is ready to shine under Kiffin, Altmyer is a guy who comes in with previous knowledge of the system and (limited) experience on the field. Regardless, Kiffin is running out of time to pick a starter, as the Rebels’ regular season begins on Sept. 3 when they do battle against Troy. That game is set to kick off at 3 p.m. ET live on the SEC Network.
