Ole Miss forward Mikeal Brown-Jones did not play during the Rebels’ 77-65 win over LSU on Saturday.

It’s the second game in a row that the senior has missed. After the win, Rebels head coach Chris Beard updated the status of Brown-Jones moving forward.

“He’s in concussion protocol,” Beard revealed. “… We’ve got great trainers and great doctors, and Mikeal is as tough as any player I’ve ever coached, so he’s doing everything he can doctors, trainers, communicating around the clock.”

Still, Ole Miss hasn’t missed a step without its veteran forward. They’re 2-0 without his services with a road win over Arkansas and Saturday’s win over LSU. Joining Auburn and Alabama, the Rebels are one of three SEC teams to begin conference action 3-0 overall.

Brown-Jones averages 6.1 points and 2.2 rebounds so far during his first season with the Rebels. He’s a transfer from UNCG and played two seasons at VCU before that. Last season he averaged 18.1 points and 7.5 rebounds before transferring the Ole Miss.

Now in his fifth season of college basketball, Brown-Jones is taking on a lesser role after his transfer to Ole Miss. He’s started one game in 14 appearances in Beard’s rotation depsite starting all 28 games for UNCG one season ago.

He has shown flashes of what led Ole Miss to recruit him out of the NCAA transfer portal. He’s scoring in double figures three times this season, proving he can score in volume if given the opportunity.

However, in trying to adapt to his new spot in the lineup, he suffered the setback.

“He’s progressing in the right direction, so we’re hoping he can play sooner than later,” Beard continued. “And again, just recognizing we’ve had some people step up during his absence, you know, to win two SEC games without Mikeal, there’s something good going on with our team.”

Ole Miss will look to get his services back on the court soon, as the Rebels are in store for a brutal January schedule. They get to enjoy the LSU win for the weekend, but have to move on quick as they travel to No. 5 Alabama on Tuesday. They’ll take on No. 14 Mississippi State on the road next weekend and No. 10 Texas A&M on the following Wednesday.
