Ole Miss quarterback Luke Altmyer recently spoke to the media and was asked about the number of new faces on the roster this year, many of which will be key contributors to the Rebel’s offensive success this season. Altmeyer spoke on the uniqueness of year’s team and what he expects from them with the season right around the corner.

“This is a very unique year, a very unique team and season, so many impact players will be guys from other schools and even freshmen coming in I feel like. So it’ll be very exciting to see those guys do their thing and the guys who have been here as well who have impacted this team in a great way will do amazing things for us as well, but it’s obviously a challenge to kind of mold that team together and grow together,” Altmyer said.

Altmyer has been in a quarterback competition with transfer Jaxson Dart for all of spring and fall camp, with head coach Lane Kiffin still not naming a starter in the midst of their season opener just a few days away. Regardless, Altmeyer still seems focused on one thing, winning.

“But I think Jared Ivey spoke on it, everybody here just wants to win, and that comes from coach Kiffin and just the team itself. It’s a winning culture here and very thankful for it,” Altmyer said.

Altmyer, a sophomore, last saw actions for the Rebels in their Sugar Bowl matchup last season versus No. 7 ranked Baylor, when he came in for the injured Matt Corral. Altmyer didn’t lead the Rebels to victory but threw for 174 yards and his first career touchdown on 15-28 attempts. Altmeyer made four other limited appearances for the Rebels, only one less than Dart who saw extended snaps for USC during his freshman season last year where he threw for 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns in six games and also rushed for two touchdowns.

Ole Miss opens the season up against Troy at home this Saturday, September 3 and it’s still uncertain if Kiffin’s vagueness of naming a starting quarterback is a strategic tactic or not. But whether Altmyer or Dart are starting at quarterback for the Rebels, their QB1 will have to rely on their new weapons to maintain their recent winning ways established last season when they went 10-3 (their first ten win season since 2015).
